The Honorable Fred Patton, Chairperson
House Committee on Judiciary
Statehouse, Room 519-N
Topeka, Kansas 66612
Dear Representative Patton:
SUBJECT: Fiscal Note for HB 2332 by House Committee on Judiciary
In accordance with KSA 75-3715a, the following fiscal note concerning HB 2332 is
respectfully submitted to your committee.
HB 2332 would allow recovery for, in addition to other damages, exemplary and punitive
damages in a wrongful death action. The bill specifies that the court would determine the amount
of exemplary or punitive damages if awarded by the trier of fact.
The Office of Judicial Administration indicates the enactment of HB 2332 could have a
fiscal effect on the operations of the Judicial Branch because the bill’s provisions would allow the
court to determine the amount of punitive and exemplary damages in some cases, which could
extend the cases. Any fiscal effect associated with HB 2332 is not reflected in The FY 2020
Governor’s Budget Report.

Sincerely,

Larry L. Campbell
Director of the Budget
