As Amended by Senate Committee on Federal
and State Affairs

Brief*
SB 158, as amended, would designate the official state
dances as the polka and square dancing.

Background
The bill was introduced by the Senate Committee on
Federal and State Affairs at the request of Senator Miller.
In the Senate Committee hearing, Senator Miller, and
three private citizens testified in favor of the bill. Proponents
generally indicated that the bill would designate a state dance
that is prevalent across the state and is an important part of
the history of Kansas. Written proponent testimony was
provided by representatives of Czechland Polka Band,
Kansas Czechs Inc., Moravan Lodge No. 128, and a private
citizen.
Additional testimony was received after the hearing from
representatives of the Kansas Square Dance Association,
Kansas Square Dance Callers Association, and two private
citizens. The additional testimony asked that square dancing
also be considered for designation as the official state dance.
No other testimony was provided.
The Senate Committee amended the bill to add square
dancing as one of the official state dances.
