The Honorable Fred Patton, Chairperson
House Committee on Judiciary
Statehouse, Room 519-N
Topeka, Kansas 66612
Dear Representative Patton:
SUBJECT: Fiscal Note for HB 2291 by House Committee on Judiciary
In accordance with KSA 75-3715a, the following fiscal note concerning HB 2291 is
respectfully submitted to your committee.
HB 2291 would increase the cap on wrongful death actions from $250,000 to $500,000.
The bill specifies that beginning on July 1, 2020, and on July 1 each following year, the dollar
amounts specified in the bill would be increased by an amount equal to the percentage increase in
the consumer price index for all urban consumers as published by the U.S. Department of Labor
for the preceding fiscal year as certified to the Judicial Administrator by the Director of the Budget
on June 1 of each year.
According to the Office of Judicial Administration, enactment of HB 2291 would have a
negligible fiscal effect on the operations of the Judicial Branch.

Sincerely,

Larry L. Campbell
Director of the Budget
