1 A SENATE RESOLUTION memorializing Marvin Leroy
2 Keyes.
3 Whereas, Marvin Leroy Keyes passed away on April 15,

5 children;
6 Whereas, Leroy was born on February 18, 1947, in
7 Newport News, Virginia;
8 Whereas, Leroy played college football at Purdue
9 University, where he was the only two-time consensus All-
10 American running back, a two-time Heisman Trophy finalist,
11 and one of the greatest football players in Purdue history;
12 Whereas, Leroy was the Philadelphia Eagles' first-round
13 draft pick, third overall, in the 1969 National Football League
14 ("NFL") Draft, where he played from 1969 to 1972, and then
15 for the Kansas City Chiefs in 1973;
16 Whereas, Leroy was not only an all-star football player, but
17 a staunch community activist, and during his time at Purdue

1 civil rights and a voice for change;
2 Whereas, After his retirement from the NFL, Leroy served
3 as a desegregation specialist for the School District of
4 Philadelphia for sixteen years, and then rejoined the Purdue
5 family in 1995 as a running back coach under Jim Colletto
6 until 1996, an administrative assistant under Jim Tiller from
7 1997 until 1999, and then as a member of the John Purdue
8 Club staff until his retirement in 2011;
9 Whereas, Leroy is survived by his wife, Monica, and his
10 four children, Colin, Raymond, Jacqueline, and Courtland;
11 Whereas, Leroy never knew a stranger, and will be
12 remembered for his iconic football career, his compassion, and
13 his love of Purdue; and
14 Whereas, In recognition of Leroy's contributions to Purdue
15 University and the State of Indiana, it would be fitting for the
16 Indiana General Assembly, during the Second Regular Session
17 of the One Hundred Twenty-Second General Assembly, to urge
18 the Indiana Department of Transportation to designate a
19 portion of State Road 231 in Tippecanoe County in his honor:
20 Therefore,
21 Be it resolved by the Senate of the
22 General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
23 SECTION 1. That the Indiana Senate memorializes Marvin
24 Leroy Keyes.
