1 A HOUSE RESOLUTION honoring Carol Tumey.
2 Whereas, Carol Tumey is known by friends and colleagues
3 as an extraordinary public servant and a humble pioneer for
4 girls athletics in the state of Indiana;
5 Whereas, Mrs. Tumey devoted 40 years as a teacher and
6 athletic administrator at Center Grove High School;
7 Whereas, Mrs. Tumey forged a path for female athletes at
8 Center Grove, developing the first girls' sports program;
9 Whereas, Mrs. Tumey became the first girls' basketball
10 coach and went on to coach girls track and field, volleyball,
11 and cross country teams. She is also credited with creating the
12 first girls' county basketball tournament in Franklin County;

1 Whereas, Mrs. Tumey was elected to the Center Grove
2 Community School Corporation Board of Trustees in 2008, on
3 which she served three terms. She held several leadership
4 positions and served as a Board liaison to many community
5 groups;
6 Whereas, Mrs. Tumey was inducted into the Indiana
7 Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011 for her many years of service
8 to female athletics in Indiana;
9 Whereas, Mrs. Tumey continues her service to the state of
10 Indiana as a professor at her alma mater, Franklin College,
11 where she teaches the next generation of educators;
12 Whereas, On January 5, 2021, Mrs. Tumey was presented
13 with the Sagamore of the Wabash award from Indiana
14 Governor Eric Holcomb in recognition of her impact in
15 Indiana; and
16 Whereas, It is fitting that the House of Representatives
17 honors Mrs. Tumey for her many contributions to her
18 community and the state of Indiana: Therefore,
19 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the
20 General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
21 SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives
22 honors Mrs. Carol Tumey for her pioneering work for female
23 athletics in Indiana.
24 SECTION 2. That the Indiana House of Representatives
25 congratulates Mrs. Carol Tumey as a recipient of the Sagamore
26 of the Wabash award.
27 SECTION 3. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
28 Representatives shall transmit copies of this resolution to the
29 office of State Representative John Jacob for distribution.
