1 A HOUSE RESOLUTION remembering 1950 Madison
2 High School basketball champions Mr. Donald L. McCauley
3 and Mr. Spencer J. Schnaitter.
4 Whereas, Indiana basketball is a much-loved institution
5 rooted in the hearts and minds of Hoosiers, young and old;
6 Whereas, Residents in Madison, Indiana, and the greater
7 community of basketball fans, remember the lives of Mr.
8 Donald L. McCauley and Mr. Spencer J. Schnaitter, and
9 celebrate their 1950 IHSAA state basketball final championship
10 win;
11 Whereas, Mr. McCauley and Mr. Schnaitter passed away in
12 January 2021 at the ages of 87 and 88, respectively;
13 Whereas, McCauley, guard, and Schnaitter, center, started

1 for the historic Madison High School Cubs basketball team
2 coached by Ray Eddy;
3 Whereas, The Madison Cubs played the Marion Giants at
4 Butler Fieldhouse in Indianapolis to more than 15,000
5 basketball fans from across the Hoosier state;
6 Whereas, The Cubs' 1950 state tourney was hotly contested
7 and culminated in a 50-49 Madison victory in the final seconds
8 of the game;
9 Whereas, The Cubs won the championship as notable
10 underdogs that played their season with balanced teamwork,
11 determination, and athleticism;
12 Whereas, Mr. McCauley and Mr. Schnaitter enjoyed long
13 and successful careers upon graduating from Madison High
14 School;
15 Whereas, Mr. McCauley went on to marry Caroline M.
16 Lynch, his wife of 63 years, and the two had two daughters and
17 two sons;
18 Whereas, Mr. McCauley served in the United States Army
19 and became a successful businessman serving his community in
20 many roles, including: president, Mite Federal Saving and
21 Loan Association; president, Home Federal; president, First
22 Federal Saving and Loan Association in Peru, Indiana;
23 president, Peru Chamber of Commerce; president, Peru-Miami
24 County Economic Development Corporation; and board
25 member, United Way;
26 Whereas, Mr. Schnaitter went on to Yale University, where
27 he graduated as an accomplished athlete in basketball,
28 including MVP as a junior and team captain as a senior;
29 Whereas, Mr. Schnaitter married Laura Ann Mill in 1954,
30 and the two had three sons and two daughters;
31 Whereas, Mr. Schnaitter served in the United States Army
32 before he returned to Indiana and graduated from the Indiana
33 University Law School (Bloomington) in 1959;

1 Whereas, Mr. Schnaitter and his family moved to Madison,
2 where he practiced law for more than 60 years, and was active
3 in his community, serving as a five-term state representative,
4 Indiana General Assembly; city attorney, Madison; and
5 county attorney, Jefferson County;
6 Whereas, Mr. McCauley and Mr. Schnaitter shared a deep
7 love of basketball and athletics; and
8 Whereas, Mr. McCauley and Mr. Schnaitter are celebrated
9 Hoosiers who will be remembered fondly by friends, family, and
10 colleagues for their many contributions in their communities:
11 Therefore,
12 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the
13 General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
14 SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives
15 celebrates and remembers the life of Mr. Donald L. McCauley
16 for his contributions in his community and the state of Indiana.
17 SECTION 2. That the Indiana House of Representatives
18 celebrates and remembers the life of Mr. Spencer J. Schnaitter
19 for his contributions in his community and the state of Indiana.
20 SECTION 3. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
21 Representatives shall transmit copies of this resolution to the
22 office of State Representative Zach Payne for distribution.
