RESOLUTION No. 21
1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION memorializing Marine
2 Corporal John C. Bishop.
3 Whereas, Corporal John C. Bishop was born October 17,
4 1984, in Batesville, Indiana, to Eugene and Sarah Bishop;
5 Whereas, John Bishop knew as a child that he wanted to
6 become a Marine, and he enlisted soon after graduating from
7 Southwestern Shelby High School in 2003;
8 Whereas, Cpl. Bishop was stationed at Camp Lejeune, North
9 Carolina, and assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine
10 Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, Marine Expeditionary Force;
11 Whereas, Cpl. Bishop was on his third tour, having served
12 previously in Iraq for two tours, when he was shot and killed in
13 the line of duty while on patrol in Helmand province,
14 Afghanistan, in 2010. He was 25 years of age;
15 Whereas, Cpl. Bishop was survived by his wife, son, unborn
16 daughter, mother, and siblings;
17 Whereas, It is fitting that the Indiana General Assembly
18 recognize and remember Cpl. Bishop as a born-and-raised
19 Hoosier, a proud Marine, and a loving husband, father, son,
20 and brother; and
21 Whereas, The Indiana General Assembly urges the Indiana
22 Department of Transportation to rename the bridge on U.S. 50
23 outside Versailles State Park in Ripley County the "Marine
24 Corporal John C. Bishop Memorial Bridge" in memory of Cpl.

1 Bishop's service and sacrifice on behalf of the United States of
2 America: Therefore,
3 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives
4 of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,
5 the Senate concurring:
6 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly urges the
7 Indiana Department of Transportation to rename a bridge on
8 U.S. 50 outside Versailles State Park in Ripley County the
9 "Marine Corporal John C Bishop Memorial Bridge" in memory
10 of Marine Corporal John C. Bishop's service to the State of
11 Indiana and United States of America.
12 SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
13 Representatives shall transmit copies of this resolution to the
14 family of Marine Corporal John C. Bishop and the
15 Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Transportation.
