1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION congratulating the
2 Covenant Christian High School football team on winning the
3 2020 Indiana High School Athletic Association ("IHSAA")
4 Class A state championship.
5 Whereas, Covenant Christian High School was founded in
6 1995 on the west side of Indianapolis and has a student body of
7 approximately 350 students;
8 Whereas, Covenant Christian High School began their
9 football program in 2014;
10 Whereas, While judiciously navigating the disruption
11 caused by the COVID-19 pandemic throughout 2020, Covenant
12 Christian's first year head coach, Shawn Lyons, led the
13 Warriors to a perfect 15-0 record and an overall ranking of
14 30th of all high schools in the State of Indiana;
15 Whereas, The Covenant Christian Warriors defeated the
16 South Putnam Eagles in the regional championship with a
17 score of 48-7;
18 Whereas, The Covenant Christian Warriors decisively beat
19 the West Washington Senators in a semi-state match-up by a
20 score of 55-8;
21 Whereas, The Warriors' perfect football season culminated
22 at the 48th Annual IHSAA Class A football state finals on
23 Saturday, November 28, 2020 at Lucas Oil Stadium in
24 Indianapolis;

1 Whereas, With less than five minutes left in the fourth
2 quarter and down by 7 points, Warriors quarterback, Austin
3 Frazier, threw to Adrian Terry, who ran for a 31-yard
4 touchdown, tying the score;
5 Whereas, Warriors senior, Gage Coffey, made a 34-yard
6 run and scored the winning touchdown;
7 Whereas, In the final two minutes of the game, the
8 Warriors' defense blocked the South Adams Starfires' two-point
9 conversion attempt, clinching the win for Covenant Christian
10 High School;
11 Whereas, After a hard-fought battle against the South
12 Adams High School Starfires, in what was described as an
13 "instant classic" in the IHSAA State Finals history, the
14 Warriors prevailed 41-40 to win their first Class A football
15 championship; and
16 Whereas, This 2020 state championship represented the
17 first state championship in any sport for Covenant Christian
18 High School: Therefore,
19 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly
20 of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives
21 concurring:
22 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly
23 congratulates the Covenant Christian High School football team
24 on winning the 2020 IHSAA Class A state championship.
25 SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed
26 to transmit copies of this Resolution to each member of the
27 Covenant Christian High School football team.
