STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
RS27587 / H0429
This legislation creates a pilot project which gives the Public Defense Commission the authority and
responsibility to administer, supervise and direct public defenders of participating counties in the Second
Judicial District in accordance with its indigent defense standards. The pilot project sunsets on October 1,
2025 unless reauthorized before such time.
FISCAL NOTE
There may be a savings with respect to this consolidation of administration. All of the local funding portion
of participating counties would be delivered to the Public Defense Commission at a date certain. The Public
Defense Commission would also have access to its own funds and grants for the administration of the public
defenders otherwise given to participating counties in the Second Judicial District.
