3 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:

1 Section 1. Section 149.3, subsection 4, Code 2023, is
2 amended by striking the subsection and inserting in lieu
3 thereof the following:
4 4. Have successfully completed two years in a residency
5 program approved by the council on podiatric medical education.
6 As part of the initial license renewal, the licensee shall
7 provide documentation showing completion of a residency program
8 approved by the council on podiatric medical education. This
9 subsection applies to all applicants who graduate from a
10 school of podiatry on or after the effective date of this Act.
11 The board shall adopt rules for the implementation of this
12 subsection.
13 EXPLANATION
14 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
15 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly.
16 This bill requires an applicant for a license to practice
17 podiatry to have completed two years in a residency program
18 approved by the council on podiatric medical education. The
19 bill also requires a licensee to provide documentation showing
20 the completion of such a residency program at the time of the
21 licensee’s first license renewal. This requirement applies to
22 all applicants who graduate from a school of podiatry on or
23 after the effective date of the bill. Under current law, an
24 applicant must have completed a residency program as determined
25 by the board of podiatry by rule.
