1 An Act relating to the instruction provided in the kindergarten
2 program to students enrolled in school districts, accredited
3 nonpublic schools, and charter schools.
4 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:

1 Section 1. Section 256.11, subsection 2, Code 2023, is
2 amended to read as follows:
3 2. The kindergarten program shall include experiences
4 designed to develop healthy emotional and social habits and
5 growth in the language arts and communication skills, as well
6 as a capacity for the completion of individual tasks, and
7 protect and increase physical well-being with attention given
8 to experiences relating to the development of life skills
9 and human growth and development. The kindergarten program
10 shall incorporate the use of learning centers each school
11 day that use different materials and activities to support
12 various learning standards and educational goals within each
13 center. A kindergarten teacher shall be licensed to teach in
14 kindergarten. An accredited nonpublic school must meet the
15 requirements of this subsection only if the nonpublic school
16 offers a kindergarten program.

18 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
19 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly.
20 This bill relates to the instruction provided in the
21 kindergarten program to students enrolled in school districts,
22 accredited nonpublic schools, and charter schools. The bill
23 requires the kindergarten program to incorporate the use of
24 learning centers each school day that use different materials
25 and activities to support various learning standards and
26 educational goals within each center.
