1 An Act relating to hunting deer by persons with bow season
2 licenses.
3 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:

1 Section 1. Section 483A.8, Code 2023, is amended by adding
2 the following new subsection:
3 NEW SUBSECTION. 10. A person who is issued a bow season
4 deer hunting license and who is unsuccessful in taking a deer
5 under such license and tag during a bow season established by
6 the commission by rule may use the bow season deer hunting
7 license and tag during the late muzzleloader season or the
8 January antlerless deer hunting season established by the
9 commission by rule that follows the bow season for which the
10 license and tag were valid. A person hunting with a bow
11 season deer hunting license and unfilled tag pursuant to this
12 subsection may use a crossbow during the January antlerless
13 deer hunting season.
14 EXPLANATION
15 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
16 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly.
17 Pursuant to current rules, the natural resource commission
18 (NRC) may establish an antlerless deer only deer hunting season
19 from January 11 through the second Sunday after that date
20 if there are at least 100 unsold antlerless deer only deer
21 hunting licenses in the county on the third Monday in December
22 preceding the season. This season is in addition to the
23 January antlerless deer only hunting season established in Code
24 section 483A.8, subsection 9.
25 This bill allows a person who was unsuccessful in taking
26 a deer during a bow season established by NRC by rule while
27 using a bow season deer hunting license to use the license and
28 unfilled tag during the late muzzleloader season or the January
29 antlerless deer hunting season that follows the bow season
30 for which the license and tag were valid. A person hunting
31 pursuant to the bill is authorized to hunt using a crossbow
32 during the January antlerless deer hunting season.
