3 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:

1 Section 1. NEW SECTION. 331.662 Residency of deputy
2 sheriffs.
3 A deputy sheriff employed by an office of county sheriff
4 shall, by July 1, 2023, reside in the county which elected
5 the county sheriff. In the case of a multicounty sheriff, as
6 provided for in section 331.661, a deputy sheriff employed by a
7 multicounty sheriff shall reside in one of the counties sharing
8 the services of the county sheriff.
9 Sec. 2. NEW SECTION. 362.10A Residency of police officers.
10 A police officer employed by a municipal police department
11 shall, by July 1, 2023, reside in the city which the municipal
12 police department represents.
13 EXPLANATION
14 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
15 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly.
16 This bill relates to residency requirements for deputy
17 sheriffs and police officers.
18 The bill provides that a deputy sheriff employed by an office
19 of county sheriff shall reside in the county which elected the
20 county sheriff. In the case of a multicounty sheriff, a deputy
21 sheriff employed by a multicounty sheriff shall reside in one
22 of the counties sharing the services of the county sheriff.
23 The bill provides that a police officer employed by a
24 municipal police department shall reside in the city which the
25 municipal police department represents.
26 The residency requirements for deputy sheriffs and police
27 officers must be complied with by July 1, 2023.
