A BILL FOR
1 An Act relating to the administering, prescribing, or ordering
2 of immunizations or vaccines by a licensed podiatric
3 physician, and providing an effective date.
4 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:

1 Section 1. Section 149.5, Code 2021, is amended to read as
2 follows:
3 149.5 Amputations —— anesthesia —— prescription drugs ——
4 immunizations and vaccines.
5 1. A license to practice podiatry shall not authorize the
6 licensee to amputate the human foot.
7 2. A licensed podiatric physician may do all of the
8 following:
9 a. Administer local anesthesia.
10 b. Administer conscious sedation in a hospital or an
11 ambulatory surgical center.
12 c. Prescribe and administer drugs for the treatment of human
13 foot ailments as provided in section 149.1.
14 d. Order, prescribe, or administer an immunization or
15 vaccine pursuant to protocols developed by the board in
16 consultation with the department of public health. A licensed
17 podiatric physician may order, prescribe, or administer
18 epinephrine when medically indicated for an anaphylactic
19 adverse reaction to the administered immunization or vaccine.
20 Sec. 2. EFFECTIVE DATE. This Act, being deemed of immediate
21 importance, takes effect upon enactment.
22 EXPLANATION
23 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
24 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly.
25 This bill provides that a podiatric physician may order,
26 prescribe, or administer an immunization or vaccine pursuant to
27 protocols developed by the board of podiatry in consultation
28 with the department of public health. Additionally, the bill
29 authorizes a licensed podiatric physician to order, prescribe,
30 or administer epinephrine when medically indicated for an
31 anaphylactic adverse reaction to the administered immunization
32 or vaccine. The bill takes effect upon enactment.
