2 public employees’ retirement system by certain medical
3 students.
4 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:

1 Section 1. Section 97B.1A, subsection 8, paragraph a, Code
2 2021, is amended by adding the following new subparagraph:
3 NEW SUBPARAGRAPH. (14) Graduate medical students while
4 serving as interns or resident doctors in training at any
5 hospital.
6 Sec. 2. Section 97B.1A, subsection 8, paragraph b,
7 subparagraph (2), Code 2021, is amended to read as follows:
8 (2) Graduate medical students while serving as interns or
9 resident doctors in training at any hospital, or county County
10 medical examiners and deputy county medical examiners under
11 chapter 331, subchapter V, part 8, who are not full-time county
12 employees.
13 EXPLANATION
14 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
15 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly.
16 This bill relates to eligibility for coverage under the
17 Iowa public employees’ retirement system (IPERS). Current
18 law provides that graduate medical students while serving as
19 interns or resident doctors in training at any hospital are
20 not employees for purposes of IPERS. The bill removes this
21 exclusion.
