AN ACT
RELATING TO PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS FOR THE CERTIFICATION OR
DESIGNATION OF MUSIC THERAPISTS AND PROVIDING PENALTIES.
3 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:
1 Section 1. NEW SECTION. 154G.1 Definitions.
2 As used in this chapter, unless the context otherwise
3 requires:
4 1. “Music therapist” means a person who holds an active
5 music therapist board-certified credential granted by the
6 certification board for music therapists.
7 2. “Music therapy” means the clinical and evidence-based
8 use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals
9 for people of all ages and ability levels within a therapeutic
10 relationship by a music therapist.
11 Sec. 2. NEW SECTION. 154G.2 Practice or use of title.
12 1. A person shall not profess to be a music therapist or
13 board-certified music therapist or use the initials “MT-BC” or
14 any other words, letters, abbreviations, or insignia indicating
15 or implying that the person is a music therapist unless the
16 person holds and maintains the music therapist board-certified
17 credential granted by the certification board for music
18 therapists.
19 2. This chapter does not prohibit a person from using music
20 in the performance of the person’s profession or occupation
21 if the person does not represent that the person is a music
22 therapist.

23 3. A person who recklessly, knowingly, or intentionally
24 violates this section is guilty of a simple misdemeanor.
