SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

urging the department of education to INCLUDE CIVIC ONLINE REASONING AND MEDIA LITERACY in its information technology curriculum.

 

 

        WHEREAS, teaching civic online reasoning and media literacy prepares students for judging credibility of the media and online sources; and

 

        WHEREAS, exposure to the principles of truth and fact allows for students to better distinguish falsehoods and to better prepare them in the twenty-first century of news and online media; and

 

        WHEREAS, studies have shown that many students have failed to effectively evaluate the credibility of information and should be given the tools to seek and evaluate information to distinguish truths from falsehoods; and

 

        WHEREAS, learning about the origin of information allows students to seek evidence, become well-informed, and to identify trustworthy sources; and

 

        WHEREAS, according to a study conducted by Stanford University researchers, when it comes to evaluating information that flows through social media channels, children are easily misled; and

 

        WHEREAS, being educated about civic online reasoning and media literacy increases students' ability to access, analyze, and evaluate information; and

 

        WHEREAS, Hawaii's students, as a whole, will develop sound digital citizenship and become media literate in a world where facts matter; now, therefore,

 

        BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2021, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Department of Education is urged to include civic online reasoning and media literacy in its information technology curriculum in order to allow students to distinguish truths from falsehoods and fact from fiction; and

 

        BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Governor, Chairperson of the Board of Education, and Superintendent of Education.
