A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION
25-4
IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
January 17, 2023
To honor the career and accomplishments of retiring news anchor, Doreen Gentzler, and to
highlight the impact that her works have had on journalism in the District of Columbia.
WHEREAS, Doreen Gentzler was raised in Arlington, Virginia and became a household
name in local cable television;
WHEREAS, Gentzler began her career working in newsrooms across the country,
including in Charlotte, North Carolina; Chattanooga, Tennessee; Cleveland, Ohio, and
Philadelphia Pennsylvania;
WHEREAS, Gentzler joined NBC4 Washington in 1989, where she served for more than
3 decades as co-anchor for one of Washington’s most popular local TV newscasts alongside
local TV news legend, Jim Vance;
WHEREAS, during their time working together, Vance and Gentzler drew in more
viewers in the Washington region than major networks such as CNN and Fox combined;
WHEREAS, throughout her career, Gentzler reported extensively both locally and
overseas in places such as Bosnia, Ecuador, and the USNS Comfort Hospital Ship;
WHEREAS, Gentzler served as the primary local health and medical reporter and was
often lauded for clearly and concisely conveying lifesaving information to viewers;
WHEREAS, Gentzler’s impact on the community and her colleagues is evident in the
outpouring of support that she has received since the announcement of her retirement;
WHEREAS, Gentzler was known for her ability to connect local issues in the
Washington region to a larger national story, thus bringing the District into the spotlight; and;

WHEREAS, Gentzler leaves behind a legacy of empathy for those whose stories she told,
and integrity in sourcing the best information for her audience.
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
resolution may be cited as the “Doreen Gentzler Recognition Resolution of 2023”.
Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes the impact that Doreen
Gentzler has had on the District of Columbia, and her colleagues, in her 3 decades of service in
journalism.
Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
