A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION

IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
June 29, 2021
To recognize and honor Faith United Church of Christ for over 40 years of spiritual leadership
and service to the District of Columbia.
WHEREAS, the church began with a small group led by Rev. Joseph E. Taylor, that left
the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church to start a new ministry;
WHEREAS, the new church was named Faith Independent Christian Church;
WHEREAS, in 1981, the church became a part of the United Church of Christ and was
known thereafter as Faith United Church of Christ;
WHEREAS, Faith United Church of Christ is a member of the Potomac Association of
the Central Atlantic Conference;
WHEREAS, Faith United Church of Christ established its place of worship in 1983 when
it purchased its property at 4900 Tenth Street, N.E. in the Michigan Park community of Ward 5;
WHEREAS, members of Faith United Church of Christ returned to the property in 2009
after being displaced for 3 years due to a pending property dispute;
WHEREAS, after years without permanent leadership, the church established Rev. Dr.
Arlecia Simmons as first Settled Pastor, and the only Black female pastor in the United Church
of Christ Potomac Association in 2016;
WHEREAS, the church installed a new spiritual leader, Bishop Dwayne D. Royster in
2017;
WHEREAS, Faith United Church of Christ has served over 1,000 families through its
Faith Mobile Food Market; and
WHEREAS, Faith United Church of Christ, under the stewardship of Bishop Dwayne
Royster, continues to serve its congregants and community diligently through various ministries.

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
resolution may be cited as the "Faith United Church of Christ Recognition Resolution of 2021".
Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia celebrates Faith United Church of Christ
for over 40 years of spiritual leadership and service in the District of Columbia.
Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
