14 To recognize Jourdinia Brown for her decades of advocacy and service to Shepherd Park, Ward 4
15 and the District.

17 WHEREAS, Jourdinia Brown grew up in Amelia, Virginia attending public schools and
18 graduating from high school with distinction;
19
20 WHEREAS, Jourdinia Brown received a Bachelor of Science in secondary education and
21 Masters in Guidance Counseling and Administration from Virginia State University;
22
23 WHEREAS, Jourdinia Brown moved to Washington, D.C. in 1963 where she pursued
24 further education at George Washington University and University of Maryland, earning an
25 Advanced Professional Certificate from the Maryland State Board of Education;
26
27 WHEREAS, Jourdinia Brown had a 36-year career in public education, both as a teacher
28 and later as a guidance counselor;

30 WHEREAS, following her retirement, Jourdinia Brown dedicated her time to serving and
31 bettering her community;

33 WHEREAS, Jourdinia Brown served as Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner for single-
34 member district 4A02 for six straight terms over a twelve-year period, where she served as
35 treasurer and vice chair of 4A;

37 WHEREAS, during her time as Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner, Jourdinia Brown
38 never campaigned or advertised her candidacy, but made it a point to let her work speak for her;

40 WHEREAS, Jourdinia Brown has been involved in several neighborhood and community
41 organizations, including the Shepherd Park Citizens Association, where she served as treasurer,
42 the Federation of Citizens Association, and a member of Georgia Avenue Gateway;

44 WHEREAS, Jourdinia Brown has been an active participant in the Districts political
45 process, participating in campaigns for various Mayors and Councilmembers;

46 WHEREAS, Jourdinia Brown has been appointed to serve on various boards and
47 commissiosn by both Mayor Anthony Williams and Mayor Adrian M. Fenty;

49 WHEREAS, Jourdinia Brown has received various accolades for her integrity and
50 dedicated services, including being honored by St. Marys College for being an exceptional
51 counselor, a letter of commendation from the Maryland State Superintendent of Schools, several
52 certificates and awards from the Shepherd Park Citizens Association, a Certificate of Appreciation
53 from Mayor Anthony Williams, a Certificate of Appreciation from Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, and a
54 Ceremonial Resolution in 2008 from then Councilmember Muriel E. Bowser; and

56 WHEREAS, Jourdinia Brown has had a tremendous impact on her community and the
57 District, serving with integrity, loyalty, and conscientious, tireless, and dedicated service.

59 RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
60 resolution may be cited as the Jourdinia Brown Ceremonial Recognition Resolution of 2020.
61 Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia Jourdinia Brown for her dedication to
62 improving the lives of all people and for serving her community with dignity and tireless effort.
63 Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon the first date of publication in
64 the District of Columbia Register.
