8 To posthumously recognize of Katherine Brown.

10 WHEREAS, Katherine Brown was born January 3, 1933, in Clarendon County, South
11 Carolina, daughter of the late Jesse and Lou Willer McFadden;
12
13 WHEREAS, Katherine Brown received her education in the public schools of Clarendon
14 and Sumter Counties;
15
16 WHEREAS, Katherine Brown joined Sumter Second Presbyterian Church and remained
17 a loyal and faithful member until relocating to Washington, D.C., where she joined Pilgrim
18 Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Charles W. Green;
19
20 WHEREAS, Katherine Brown was employed in the Federal Government at the Bureau of
21 Engraving and Printing as a Postage Stamp Book Examiner until she retired in 1973;
22
23 WHEREAS, Katherine Brown then worked part-time at the University of Maryland, The
24 Fraternal Office of Police Building and NAPA as a part of T&G Janitorial Services until her
25 retirement in January 2000;

27 WHEREAS, Katherine Brown was a founding member of the Washington, D.C. Metro
28 Sumterites, a social organization that existed for more than 23 years;

30 WHEREAS, Katherine Brown was a pillar of her community who worked with her
31 Eastland Gardens neighbors since 1963 to strengthen the bonds tying the community together;

33 WHEREAS, Katherine Brown was active in the Eastland Gardens Civic Association and
34 served as Block Captain;

36 WHEREAS, Katherine Brown actively participated in the community initiatives of her
37 Metropolitan Police Department Sixth District Police Service Area (PSA) and was an integral
38 part of the D.C. Department of Energy and Environments Nash Run Stream Restoration Project
39 in 2016;

41 WHEREAS, Katherine Brown truly loved and was loved by her family, friends, and
42 community; and
43
44 WHEREAS, Katherine Brown passed away Sunday morning, August 9, 2020, in the
45 comfort of her home surrounded by her loved ones.

47 IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF
48 COLUMBIA, That this resolution may be cited as the Katherine Brown Recognition Resolution
49 of 2020.

51 Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia proudly celebrates Katherine Brown, her
52 life, accomplishments, and contributions to her community.

54 Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon the first date of publication in
55 the District of Columbia Register.
