FACT SHEET FOR S.B. 1528

 

Maricopa; STEM workplace programs; appropriation

Purpose

                      Appropriates $10,327,800 from the state General Fund (state GF) in FY 2022 to the Maricopa County Community College District (Maricopa Community Colleges) for additional science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce programs.

Background

                      A community college is an educational institution that is operated by a district board and provides programs not exceeding two years beyond grade 12 of the public or private course of study or vocational education, including terminal courses of a technical and vocational nature and basic adult education courses (A.R.S.   15-1401).

                      Appropriations made to community college districts for STEM workforce programs must be made to an account designated as a STEM workforce programs fund (fund). Monies in a fund are required to be used for STEM purposes and expenditures that include: 1) partnerships with businesses and educational institutions; 2) additional faculty for improved and expanded classroom instruction and course offerings; 3) technology, equipment and technology infrastructure;
4) student services relating to assessments, advisement and counseling for new and expanded job opportunities; and 5) purchase, lease or lease-purchase of real property (A.R.S.   15-1464).

                      S.B. 1528 appropriates $10,327,800 from the state GF in FY 2022 to the Maricopa Community Colleges.

Provisions

1.   Appropriates $10,327,800 from the state GF in FY 2022 to the Maricopa Community Colleges for STEM workforce programs.

2.   Requires the Maricopa Community Colleges to distribute monies first to Estrella Mountain Community College and Glendale Community College to develop and expand high-need health care programs.

3.   Requires the Maricopa Community Colleges to distribute the remaining monies to the other community colleges in the District to develop and expand programs in high-need workforce areas of health care, technology and manufacturing.

4.   Becomes effective on the general effective date.
