FACT SHEET FOR H.B. 2173

commercial driver licenses; renewal time

Purpose

                      Requires a person who possesses a commercial driver license (CDL) to renew the CDL every eight years, rather than every five years.

Background

                      An original applicant for a class A, B or C CDL must: 1) submit evidence of compliance with medical standards and requirements; 2) have held a driver license in Arizona or another state or country for at least one year; 3) take additional knowledge examinations of various vehicle systems; and 4) take a driving test in a vehicle of the same size requirements as that of the CDL being sought. A person who possesses a CDL must renew the CDL according to procedures established by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) and may be required to take a renewal examination. An original or renewed CDL is valid for five years (A.R.S.   28-3223).

                      There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund associated with this legislation.

Provisions

1.   Extends, from every five years to every eight years, the time period within which a CDL holder must renew the CDL through ADOT.

2.   Becomes effective on the general effective date.
