8 TO RECOGNIZE THE LINKS, INCORPORATED FOR ITS SERVICE
9 TO THE STATE OF ARKANSAS.

14 ITS SERVICE TO THE STATE OF ARKANSAS.

16 WHEREAS, The Links, Incorporated is an international, not-for-profit
17 corporation, established in 1946 by Margaret Rosell Hawkins and Sarah
18 Strickland Scott; and
19
20 WHEREAS, The Links, Incorporated membership consists of seventeen
21 thousand (17,000) professional women of color in two hundred ninety-nine
22 (299) chapters found in forty-one (41) states, the District of Columbia, the
23 Commonwealth of the Bahamas, and the United Kingdom; and
24
25 WHEREAS, The Links, Incorporated is one of the nation’s oldest and
26 largest volunteer service organizations of women who are committed to
27 enriching, sustaining, and ensuring the cultural and economic survival of
28 African Americans and other persons of African ancestry; and
29
30 WHEREAS, The Links, Incorporated programs are implemented through five
31 (5) program facets: services to youth; the arts; national trends and
32 services; international trends and services; and health and human services;
33 and
34
35 WHEREAS, The Links, Incorporated members contribute over one million
36 (1,000,000) service hours annually and have donated one million dollar

1 ($1,000,000) grants to six (6) organizations including St. Jude Children’s
2 Research Hospital, Smithsonian National Museum of African American History
3 and Culture, and the United Negro College Fund; and
4
5 WHEREAS, the Little Rock, Pine Bluff, and Northwest Arkansas Chapters
6 of The Links, Incorporated are focused on making a significant and
7 transformative impact in their respective communities through civic,
8 educational, and inter-cultural activities; and
9
10 WHEREAS, The Northwest Arkansas Chapter activities include assisting
11 young women transition who have aged out of foster care, assessing the needs
12 of abused children of color and subsequently donating “Friendship Dolls” to
13 support play therapy at a local child advocacy center, and hosting an art
14 workshop to educate children through sixth grade on black artists and works
15 of art; and
16
17 WHEREAS, the Pine Bluff Chapter projects include bullying preventing
18 and intervention strategies, educating students about the vast career choices
19 beyond the United States with a goal of creating a future job pool of young
20 minority students focused on careers in international business and foreign
21 affairs, and promoting health and wellness for youth through dental hygiene;
22 and
23
24 WHEREAS, the Little Rock Chapter projects include a mentoring program
25 at J. A. Fair K-8 Preparatory Academy, health and wellness educational and
26 intervention programs focusing on chronic kidney disease and maternal
27 childbirth mortality in the Black community, donating over two hundred
28 thousand dollars ($200,000) in scholarships to African American high school
29 seniors, and two hundred thousand dollars ($200,000) to the four (4)
30 Historically Black Colleges and Universities in Arkansas; and
31
32 WHEREAS, The Links, Incorporated has identified four (4) priorities for
33 legislative advocacy: health, economic stability, civil and voting rights,
34 and criminal justice and public safety,
35
36 NOW THEREFORE,

1 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE
2 STATE OF ARKANSAS:

4 THAT the Senate recognize The Links, Incorporated for its service work
5 and contributions to its communities and the State of Arkansas.
6
7 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT upon adoption, a copy of this resolution shall be
8 provided by the Secretary of the Senate to the President of the Little Rock
9 Chapter Ms. Annette Slater, President of the Northwest Arkansas Chapter Ms.
10 Sheerah Davis, and President of the Pine Bluff Chapter Ms. Tenita Shannon-
11 Gragg.
