8 CALLING UPON THE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF
9 REPRESENTATIVES TO RESPECT AND HONOR CIVIL DISCOURSE
10 IN THE INTEREST OF UNITING THE CITIZENS OF OUR STATE
11 AND NATION.

15 CALLING UPON THE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF
16 REPRESENTATIVES TO RESPECT AND HONOR
17 CIVIL DISCOURSE IN THE INTEREST OF
18 UNITING THE CITIZENS OF OUR STATE AND
19 NATION.

21 WHEREAS, we, the members of the House of Representatives, show respect
22 for our constituents by holding ourselves to the highest standards of civil
23 discourse; and
24
25 WHEREAS, we recognize our role as servant-leaders in setting the
26 appropriate tone for thoughtful discussion, realizing that we must lead on
27 this issue in hopes that those from Washington D.C. to the farthest corners
28 of our districts will rise to the challenge and recognize the immediate need
29 for a more civil tone to political debate; and
30
31 WHEREAS, free discussion in the public square is vital for our nation
32 to grow and meet today's challenges so it can survive to face the challenges
33 of tomorrow; and
34
35 WHEREAS, each of us are elected representatives of our district,
36 representing Republicans, Democrats, Independents, and many who do not align

1 with a political party or even care about politics; and

3 WHEREAS, we recognize that much of what is reported on politics only
4 showcases conflict and misses the many acts of understanding and compassion
5 that, while less sensational, are far more frequent and real; and
6
7 WHEREAS, it is our responsibility as the members of the House of
8 Representatives to take a greater role in making proper political behavior
9 sensational; and
10
11 WHEREAS, our constituents have the right to expect all one hundred
12 (100) members of the House of Representatives to work together for the
13 betterment of all of Arkansas; and
14
15 WHEREAS, petty personal attacks do not accomplish the goal of working
16 together for the betterment of this state, but thoughtful and honest debate
17 serves that goal; and
18
19 WHEREAS, we recognize that the members of the House of Representatives
20 will commonly disagree, but we resolve to disagree without being
21 disagreeable; and
22
23 WHEREAS, we recognize that the members of the House of Representatives
24 come from up to one hundred (100) different points of view and we respect and
25 revere a process which began in 1776 and continues today, allowing for
26 presentation, debate, votes, and a decision with the legislative body then
27 respectfully moving on the next item of business for the people; and
28
29 WHEREAS, our constituents deserve our very best behavior and we should
30 demand it of ourselves; and
31
32 WHEREAS, if we cannot talk civilly about the pressing problems facing
33 our society, then we can never expect to solve them; and
34
35 WHEREAS, the forces of evil seek to destroy from within with discord
36 and disruption, but we recognize that far more unites us than divides us,

2 NOW THEREFORE,
3 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL
4 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ARKANSAS:

6 THAT we, the members of the House of Representatives, resolve that it
7 is time to call upon ourselves and our respective political parties to
8 respect and honor the time-tested tenets of civil discourse and help bring
9 out nation together.
10
11 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that from this day forward we, the members of
12 the House of Representatives, pledge to demonstrate the statesmanship our
13 citizens deserve and the statesmanship our nation desperately needs.
