4 SJR___ MOURNING THE DEATH OF MS. AMY FRANCES HERRING.

6 WHEREAS, it is with profound sorrow that we note the
7 death on April 18, 2023, of Ms. Amy Frances Herring of
8 Montgomery, Alabama, at the age of 66; and
9 WHEREAS, her passing leaves a void in the lives of
10 her loving family, many friends, and the entire community,
11 where she was highly regarded; and
12 WHEREAS, a native of Headland in Houston County,
13 Alabama, Ms. Herring earned a degree in journalism from Troy
14 University; following graduation, she began her journalism
15 career covering politics for The Montgomery Advertiser;
16 subsequently, after assisting former Senator Jim Bennett
17 with his successful campaign for Alabama Secretary of State,
18 Ms. Herring became Assistant Secretary of State and later
19 was one of the first women in Alabama to start her own
20 contract lobbying firm; and
21 WHEREAS, Ms. Herring was always full of life and was
22 fun, interesting, and effervescent; she loved spending time
23 with and entertaining loved ones; traveling the world with
24 her partner of many years, Winston "Windy" Leavell; cooking;
25 and visiting New Orleans and its famous restaurants; and

26 WHEREAS, a woman with a kind, caring, and selfless
27 heart, Ms. Herring took care of and supported her friends
28 through personal and political trials, jury trials, career
29 challenges, job changes, and filibusters; and
30 WHEREAS, Ms. Herring is survived by her longtime
31 partner; precious dog, Maggie; and a multitude of friends
32 whom she called family; and
33 WHEREAS, although her presence will be greatly
34 missed, the memory of Ms. Herring will be cherished in the
35 hearts of all who knew and loved her; now therefore,
36 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
37 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That the death of Ms. Amy Frances
38 Herring is recorded with deep sadness, and this resolution
39 is offered in tribute to her life, along with heartfelt
40 sympathy to her family, whose grief is shared by many.
