8 HONORING MR. HORACE G. JACKSON ON HIS 100TH
9 BIRTHDAY.

11 WHEREAS, with very special pleasure, we highly honor
12 Mr. Horace G. Jackson on the occasion of his milestone 100th
13 Birthday on August 3, 2021; and
14 WHEREAS, Mr. Jackson was born on August 3, 1921, in
15 West Point, Mississippi; and
16 WHEREAS, Mr. Jackson graduated from Mary Holmes High
17 School in 1941; later, he attended Lane College, where he
18 earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1948, and Alabama
19 Agricultural and Mechanical University, where he earned a
20 Master of Science Degree in 1977; and
21 WHEREAS, shortly after his high school graduation,
22 Mr. Jackson joined the United States Army and fought in World
23 War II, participating in the invasion of Normandy, among other
24 missions between 1943 and 1945; for his service, he received
25 the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, and
26 the Bronze Star; in 1945, he was honorably discharged and
27 joined the U.S. Army Reserves; in 1950, he was recalled to

1 active duty and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the
2 U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict in 1279th Combat Unit,
3 which was a major achievement due to the extremely small
4 number of African Americans who were allowed to make the rank
5 of officer during that time; after 25 years of service, he
6 retired from the U.S. Army and then worked for International
7 Business Machines as an Industrial Engineer, where he served
8 for 20 years before retiring; in 2008, he and 125 other World
9 War II Veterans were flown on the Tennessee Valley Honor
10 Flight to Washington, D.C., where they viewed the monument
11 that was established in honor of those who served and
12 sacrificed in the U.S. Military during World War II; and
13 WHEREAS, Mr. Jackson has been an active member of
14 St. Joseph's Catholic Church for over 30 years, where he is
15 also a longtime member of the choir; he has volunteered for
16 his church's annual Easter Egg Hunt for many years; he is also
17 a member of the Knights of Peter Claver, where he has held the
18 office of Grand Knight of Council 286 and where he currently
19 holds the office of Treasurer; he has received the Gold Medal
20 and the Claver Man of the Year Award, the Knights of Peter
21 Claver's highest honors; in addition, the Bishop of the
22 Diocese of Birmingham awarded him the Sister Rita Washington
23 Outstanding Stewardship Leadership Award; under Mr. Jackson's
24 leadership as the Grand Knight, the annual Valentine's Day
25 Lunch began, where proceeds from these luncheons are
26 responsible for thousands of dollars in scholarships for high

1 school seniors in the greater Huntsville, Alabama, community;
2 and
3 WHEREAS, he is a lifetime member of the Alpha Phi
4 Alpha Fraternity, where he has served as the local chapter
5 Treasurer for many years, and he is a member of the Alabama
6 Agricultural and Mechanical University alumni and athletic
7 booster clubs, where he has held various offices, his most
8 recent office being Treasurer; and
9 WHEREAS, Mr. Jackson and his wife, Juanita Jackson,
10 have been married since 1945, and they have lived in Madison
11 County, Alabama, where they reared their family, for over 30
12 years; and
13 WHEREAS, as an incredible man who is deeply loved
14 and cherished by many, centenarian Mr. Jackson continues to
15 touch people's lives; now therefore,
16 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF
17 THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, That Mr. Horace G. Jackson is
18 warmly honored on his milestone 100th Birthday, and we hereby
19 dedicate this resolution to him with heartiest gratitude,
20 admiration, and regard.
