3 COMMENDING CHIEF BYRON HERRING FOR OUTSTANDING
4 PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT.
5
6 WHEREAS, we take great pride and pleasure in
7 extending highest commendation to Fire Chief Byron Herring of
8 Enterprise, Alabama, for his outstanding record of
9 professional achievement with the Enterprise Fire Department
10 spanning almost half a century of contributions and service as
11 a firefighter, risking his own life and safety on a daily
12 basis to serve and save others; and
13 WHEREAS, a native of Enterprise, Alabama, Chief
14 Herring was born to Ray and Lillie Herring and grew up on the
15 family farm; he is a 1971 graduate of Enterprise High School;
16 and
17 WHEREAS, Chief Herring joined the Enterprise Fire
18 Department in October 1973 and moved upward through the ranks
19 in his years of service; after only four years, he was elected
20 Lieutenant then rose to the rank of Captain in 1983, and was
21 elected Chief of the Department in 1993, a position he has
22 held until his retirement in May 2021; and
23 WHEREAS, in addition to his career with the
24 Enterprise Fire Department, Chief Herring has been the city's
25 Safety Officer; he is a founding member and former Chief of

1 the Battens Volunteer Fire Department; he is also a founding
2 member and former President and Vice President of the Coffee
3 County Firefighters Association; he has served on the Board of
4 Directors and as Treasurer for the Southeast Fire District
5 Six; he is a member of the Southeast Fire Chiefs Association,
6 International Fire Chiefs Association, and Alabama Fire Chiefs
7 Association; in 2018, he was named Alabama Fire Chiefs
8 Association Chief of the Year and was recognized as the
9 longest serving career fire chief in the state; and
10 WHEREAS, under his leadership the Enterprise Fire
11 Department is ranked in the top two percent of fire
12 departments in the United States; through Chief Herring's
13 judicious guidance, the Enterprise Fire Department has made
14 monumental strides, including integrating Emergency Medical
15 Services, planning and building of two new fire stations,
16 almost doubling the number of the city's firefighters;
17 outfitting the station equipment with state-of-the-art
18 equipment, maintaining proper training and mandated safety
19 regulations, and providing expert leadership and strength of
20 character during times of intense large scale fires,
21 hurricanes, and devastating tornadoes; and
22 WHEREAS, in times of crisis, there is no greater
23 comfort than the knowledge that firefighters like Chief
24 Herring are protecting us; known among family, co-workers, and

1 friends as a man of strong faith, he is willing to give
2 unselfishly of his time and resources to assist others; and
3 WHEREAS, with the loving support of his wife,
4 Martha, their children, Phillip and Christina, and their
5 grandchildren, Alexis, Austin, and Hanna, Chief Herring's
6 illustrious career is replete with accomplishments benefiting
7 the citizens of the State of Alabama; with fairness,
8 integrity, fervor, compassion, and consistency in his
9 commitment to public service, he has earned the respect and
10 gratitude of his fellow professionals and countless
11 Alabamians; now therefore,
12 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
13 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That we hereby commend Chief Byron
14 Herring for his years of dedication and unselfish service to
15 his community, and this resolution is given in deepest
16 admiration and appreciation, and along with sincere best
17 wishes for all future endeavors.
