5 NAMING THE NANCES CREEK BRIDGE ON US-278 IN CALHOUN
6 COUNTY, THE RANDALL A. ESTES MEMORIAL BRIDGE.

8 WHEREAS, Randall A. Estes was born on August 9,
9 1935, at his parents home in Tennala in the McGhee Bend
10 community near Centre in Cherokee County, Alabama; and
11 WHEREAS, Mr. Estes attended and graduated from
12 Spring Garden High School in 1953, and attended Jacksonville
13 State College; and
14 WHEREAS, he began a career with the Alabama Highway
15 Department in October 1954 that would last over 50 years,
16 working in construction, planning, programming, bridge design,
17 maintenance management and training, and as a bureau chief and
18 division engineer, retiring in February 2008; and
19 WHEREAS, he became a licensed Professional Engineer
20 on February 16, 1968; and
21 WHEREAS, he is credited with conducting professional
22 development instructional assignments during his 24 years with
23 the Maintenance Bureau that involved an estimated 10,000 city,
24 county, state, federal and private industry employees, and
25 established the standards and fundamental practices that

1 remain in use for training and certifying inspectors for the
2 safety inspection of the State of Alabamas nearly 16,000
3 bridges; and
4 WHEREAS, he traveled with 51 foreign mission teams
5 in the name of the United Methodist Church over 34 years,
6 working with 15 dental teams, 36 construction teams, and 1,300
7 missioners; and
8 WHEREAS, he worked with Habitat for Humanity on a
9 President Jimmy Carter building blitz near Americus, Georgia,
10 in 2000, that eliminated sub-standard housing in the area; and
11 WHEREAS, perhaps his greatest legacy is that he was
12 the epitome of a devoted and loving husband and father,
13 grandfather and great-grandfather, and that he was a loyal
14 friend to innumerable people from varied walks of life,
15 leaving behind the gift of his love to be cherished in the
16 hearts of all who knew him; now therefore,
17 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
18 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That the bridge over Nances Creek
19 on US-278 in Calhoun County, be designated the Randall A.
20 Estes Memorial Bridge.
21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Department of
22 Transportation is requested to determine the cost of
23 fabricating and erecting the appropriate signs or markers,
24 consistent with applicable requirements and laws, and upon
25 receiving funds from non-state sources covering that cost, to

1 erect those signs or markers as provided in this resolution in
2 recognition of this memorial designation.
