2 ENROLLED, House Joint Resolution,
3 ENDORSING AND ENCOURAGING HOLOCAUST EDUCATION IN THE
4 STATE OF ALABAMA.
5
6 WHEREAS, the people of the State of Alabama are
7 resolutely committed to providing a top quality education to
8 our children; and
9 WHEREAS, the Holocaust was one of the most horrific
10 tragedies in human history; and
11 WHEREAS, assault, harassment, and vandalism against
12 Jewish people remain at near historic levels across the United
13 States; and
14 WHEREAS, a 2018 survey from the Conference on Jewish
15 Material Claims Against Germany found that 31 percent of
16 Americans and 41 percent of millennials erroneously believe
17 that two million or fewer Jews were killed in the Holocaust;
18 and
19 WHEREAS, a 2018 survey from the same organization
20 found that 41 percent of Americans and two-thirds of
21 millennials do not know what Auschwitz was; and
22 WHEREAS, a 2020 survey from the same organization
23 found that nearly two-thirds of young adults in the United
24 States are unaware six million Jews were killed in the
25 Holocaust; and

1 WHEREAS, a 2020 survey from the same organization
2 found that 31 percent of young adults in Alabama could not
3 name a single Nazi Concentration Camp, 10 percent were not
4 sure if they believe the Holocaust happened, and nine percent
5 erroneously believe the Jewish people caused the Holocaust;
6 and
7 WHEREAS, in the past year there have been several
8 anti-Semitic incidents in the State of Alabama including acts
9 of vandalism at houses of worship and a school; and
10 WHEREAS, a 2020 survey conducted by the American
11 Jewish Committee found that 90 percent of Americans value
12 Holocaust education; and
13 WHEREAS, in her 2017 proclamation concerning the
14 Days of Remembrance, Gov. Kay Ivey noted, "the people of the
15 State of Alabama should always remember the terrible events of
16 the Holocaust and remain vigilant against hatred, persecution
17 and tyranny"; now therefore,
18 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
19 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That we commend the unwavering and
20 heroic commitment of our state's educators to ensure our
21 children have the knowledge and tools they need to become
22 productive, upstanding, and informed members of society, and
23 that we welcome the Alabama State Department of Educations
24 stated commitment to ensuring Alabama students have access to
25 quality Holocaust education.

1 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That we believe the
2 forthcoming revised Alabama Course of Study social studies
3 curriculum should contain components that ensure students
4 learn the breadth of the history of anti-Semitism and the
5 Holocaust, including the Third Reich dictatorship,
6 concentration camp system, persecution of Jews and non-Jews,
7 Jewish and non-Jewish resistance, and post-World War II
8 trials, and communicates the impact of personal
9 responsibility, civic engagement, and societal response in the
10 context of the Holocaust.
