3 NAMING THE PORTION OF ALABAMA HIGHWAY 8 (U.S.
4 HIGHWAY 80) IN LOWNDES COUNTY THE ROBERT "BOB" MANTS, JR.
5 MEMORIAL HIGHWAY.

7 WHEREAS, Robert C. Mants, Jr. was born and raised in
8 East Point, Georgia, and became the youngest member of the
9 Committee on Appeal for Human Rights, The Atlanta Student
10 Movement, at the age of 16 while at the same time volunteering
11 for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee; and
12 WHEREAS, Bob Mants came to Alabama to help plan and
13 organize the Selma-to-Montgomery March in 1965, and was in the
14 front ranks of marchers on Bloody Sunday as they crossed the
15 Edmund Pettus Bridge; and
16 WHEREAS, after the Selma-to-Montgomery March, Mr.
17 Mants moved to Lowndes County, Alabama, where he helped Black
18 people register to vote and create an independent Black
19 political party known as the Lowndes County Freedom
20 Organization, which adopted a black panther as its logo; and
21 WHEREAS, Mr. Mants led the way in creating a
22 temporary "Tent City" for Black people who, in a blatant act
23 of racial discrimination, were evicted from their homes in
24 retaliation for registering to vote; and

1 WHEREAS, Mr. Mants remained in Lowndes County where
2 he served as a Lowndes County Commissioner and President of
3 the Lowndes County Friends of Civil Rights Movement Trail
4 prior to his death on December 7, 2011; now therefore,
5 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
6 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That we declare that the portion of
7 Alabama Highway 8 (U.S. Highway 80) located in Lowndes County,
8 from mile marker 99.558 to mile marker 120.591, be named the
9 Robert "Bob" Mants, Jr. Memorial Highway.
10 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the appropriate
11 officials be requested to place and maintain signs or markers
12 as provided in this resolution.
