8 MOURNING THE DEATH OF MR. JAMES M. NEWBY, JR.

10 WHEREAS, it is with profound sorrow that we note the
11 death on February 27, 2021, of Mr. James "Jimmy" M. Newby,
12 Jr., at the age of 75; and
13 WHEREAS, his passing leaves a void in the lives of
14 his loving family, many friends, and the entire community,
15 where he was highly regarded; Mr. Newby was born in Columbia,
16 Tennessee, on April 21, 1945, to James M. Newby, Sr. and
17 Martha Allen Newby; and
18 WHEREAS, Mr. Newby grew up helping with the family
19 dairy farm, baling and hauling hay, and driving a tractor; the
20 family moved to Limestone County, Alabama, where he attended
21 Athens High School; he was elected class president his senior
22 year in 1963; after high school, Mr. Newby served in the
23 National Guard for six years; he attended Athens College while
24 in the National Guard; in 1967, Mr. Newby bought his first
25 farm, Newby Farms; he ginned cotton from that time on; and
26 WHEREAS, Mr. Newby spent time serving on many
27 boards, including Limestone County Soil and Conservation,

1 Limestone Farmers Cooperative Board serving as President from
2 2000 until now, Alabama Farmers Cooperative Board Chairman
3 2014-2016, Nationwide Insurance, Associated Growers Gin,
4 Bonnie Plant Board Chairman 2014-2016, Cooperative Financial
5 Services Board Chairman 2014-2016, and Soil Conservation
6 Service Board Vice Chairman 1998-2016; and
7 WHEREAS, his friends and family describe Mr. Newby
8 as an avid reader, down to earth, particular in his words,
9 always willing to lend an ear or helping hand, having a green
10 thumb, strong as an ox, intelligent, good, honest, and
11 hardworking; and
12 WHEREAS, Mr. Newby is predeceased by his parents; he
13 is survived by his wife of 46 years, Martha Newby; daughter,
14 Leigh Anne Toone (Shane); sons, James Newby (Lindsay) and John
15 Newby (Monica); grandchildren, Emma Newby, Grace Newby, James
16 Newby, Jr., Caroline Newby, Jack Newby, Isbella Newby, Cora
17 Toone, and Paisley Toone; brother, Jerry Newby (Diane);
18 sister, Susan Ming (Bill); and a host of several nieces and
19 nephews and many friends; and
20 WHEREAS, although his presence will be greatly
21 missed, the memories of Mr. Newby will be cherished in the
22 hearts of all who knew and loved him; now therefore,
23 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF
24 THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, That the death of Mr. James M.
25 Newby, Jr. is recorded with deep sadness, and this resolution
26 is offered in tribute to his life, along with heartfelt
27 sympathy to his family, whose grief is shared by many.
