8 RECOGNIZING ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY DAY ON MAY 6,
9 2021.

11 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority Day at the
12 Capitol will be May 6, 2021, with all three states in the
13 South Eastern Region, Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee,
14 combined; this year's celebration will be virtual for
15 Connection Committees and AKA members from the South Eastern
16 Region; and
17 WHEREAS, recent events such as the viral witnessing
18 of the death of George Floyd and the January 6, 2021, U.S.
19 Capitol Insurrection have exposed riffs in the relationships
20 between police and the communities they protect and serve; and
21 WHEREAS, trust between law enforcement agencies and
22 the people they protect and serve is essential in a democracy;
23 and
24 WHEREAS, law enforcement and the communities they
25 protect and serve are grappling with new challenges and the
26 increased complexity as both work for safer communities,
27 prevention of crime, and building trust across demographic

1 lines in an era of economic disparity, social media, and
2 identity politics; and
3 WHEREAS, we acknowledge and respect the work and
4 dedication of our public safety officer members who put their
5 lives at risk every day to serve and protect the public
6 without regard to race, color, and creed; furthermore, we
7 recognize the complex challenges that law enforcement
8 confronts and faces throughout our state; and
9 WHEREAS, police departments, elected officials,
10 individual officers, public safety unions, and community
11 leaders all have roles to play in putting an end to systemic
12 racism, dysfunctional cultures, and abusive practices in law
13 enforcement wherever they exist, and they support programs
14 that take a comprehensive and inclusive look at
15 community-based initiatives addressing core issues, such as
16 poverty, education, health, and safety; now therefore,
17 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF
18 THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, That while much work remains to be
19 done to address many long-standing issues and challenges, not
20 only within the field of law enforcement, but also within the
21 broader criminal justice system, trust between law enforcement
22 agencies and the people they protect and serve is key to the
23 stability of our communities and to the integrity of our
24 criminal justice system.
25 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That "In unity, there is
26 strength", as we work together to address current issues in

2 remain "supreme in service to all mankind."
