8 NAMING A PORTION OF ALABAMA HIGHWAY 8 (U.S. HIGHWAY
9 80) FROM SELMA TO MONTGOMERY THE JOHN R. LEWIS MEMORIAL
10 HIGHWAY.

12 WHEREAS, Congressman John Lewis was born the son of
13 sharecroppers on February 21, 1940, outside of Troy, Alabama,
14 where he grew up on his family's farm and attended segregated
15 schools; and
16 WHEREAS, Congressman John Lewis organized sit-in
17 demonstrations, was one of the 13 original Freedom Riders and
18 participated in many Freedom Rides, served as Chairman of the
19 Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and led over
20 600 peaceful protestors across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in
21 Selma, Alabama, where he was brutally attacked by Alabama
22 State Troopers on March 7, 1965, Bloody Sunday; and
23 WHEREAS, Congressman John Lewis was elected to
24 Congress in November 1986 and served Georgia's Fifth
25 Congressional District until his death on July 17, 2020; now
26 therefore,

1 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
2 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That we declare that a portion of
3 Alabama Highway 8 (U.S. Highway 80), from mile marker 85.191
4 to mile marker 120.591, be named the John R. Lewis Memorial
5 Highway.
6 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the appropriate
7 officials be requested to place and maintain signs or markers
8 as provided in this resolution.
