3 NAMING THE BRIDGE ON BENT CREEK ROAD OVER INTERSTATE
4 85 IN LEE COUNTY, THE MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT CSM BENNIE G.
5 ADKINS MEMORIAL BRIDGE.

7 WHEREAS, it is with highest commendation that we
8 name the bridge on Bent Creek Road over Interstate 85 in Lee
9 County in memory of Command Sergeant Major Bennie G. Adkins;
10 and
11 WHEREAS, a resident of Opelika, Alabama, command
12 Sergeant Major Bennie G. Adkins served more than 20 years in
13 the United States Army, over 13 of those years spent as a
14 Green Beret in the Seventh, Third, Sixth, and Fifth Special
15 Forces Groups; he deployed to Vietnam three times, with his
16 heroic efforts in one 1966 battle later recognized in 2014
17 with the awarding, by the President, of the nation's highest
18 and most prestigious military award, the Medal of Honor; and
19 WHEREAS, following retirement in 1978 at the rank of
20 Command Sergeant Major, and being highly decorated for his
21 service, he earned three degrees from Troy University and
22 operated an accounting firm in Auburn until the time of his
23 retirement, along the way touching countless lives in a
24 positive and enduring manner; and

1 WHEREAS, Command Sergeant Major Bennie G. Adkins is
2 a true American hero whose military service and contributions
3 to society leave his state and nation forever grateful; now
4 therefore,
5 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
6 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That the bridge on Bent Creek Road
7 over Interstate 85 in Lee County, be designated The Medal of
8 Honor Recipient CSM Bennie G. Adkins Memorial Bridge
9 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Department of
10 Transportation is requested to coordinate with the local
11 governing officials on fabricating and erecting appropriate
12 signs or markers, consistent with applicable requirements and
13 laws, to establish a lasting memorial to the unparalleled
14 life, accomplishments, and service of one of Alabama's
15 greatest citizens.
