3 COMMENDING DEMETRI'S BARBEQUE RESTAURANT IN
4 HOMEWOOD, ALABAMA.

6 WHEREAS, in 1950, Tyke Nakos immigrated from Greece
7 through the Port of New Orleans; he held several jobs before
8 he was in a position to launch his own business; he relied on
9 the culinary and business skills he acquired working at a
10 barbecue restaurant in Ensley, Alabama, before moving to
11 Homewood to open the El Rancho Restaurant in 1961; and
12 WHEREAS, following more than a decade of hard work,
13 during which time he helped define what is considered
14 traditional barbecue, Mr. Nakos opened Demetri's Barbeque
15 Restaurant in Homewood, Alabama, which offered fine food in a
16 family setting to diners throughout the Birmingham
17 Metropolitan Area; and
18 WHEREAS, over the next six decades, Demetri's
19 Barbeque Restaurant evolved into a landmark in downtown
20 Homewood; it became a meeting place for workers to enjoy
21 breakfast on their way to work; the patrons also crowded into
22 the restaurant to enjoy plates of barbecue, sandwiches,
23 salads, and fresh vegetables for lunch and dinner; and
24 WHEREAS, Demetri's Barbeque is now recognized as the
25 oldest restaurant in Homewood continuously operated by the

1 same family; it continues to have the warm welcome from the
2 Nakos family that was introduced 60 years ago; now therefore,
3 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
4 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That we recognize and commend
5 Demetri's Barbeque Restaurant on their 60 years of operation
6 and service in Homewood and the Birmingham Metropolitan Area;
7 and this resolution is offered to them with heartiest
8 congratulations and best wishes for continued success.
