19 Relating to education; to require public K-12
20 schools to include in their curriculums a semester-long course
21 in Black American history; and to require the State Board of
22 Education to adopt rules for its implementation and
23 enforcement.
24 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA:
25 Section 1. (a) Beginning in the 2021 school year,
26 every public elementary school, public middle school, and
27 public high school shall require the completion, at a minimum,

1 of a semester-long course studying the events of Black
2 American history, including the history of slavery in America
3 and its vestiges. Topics of instruction shall include
4 contributions made by individual African-Americans in American
5 government and in the arts, humanities, and sciences, as well
6 as the economic, cultural, and political development of the
7 United States and Africa and the socioeconomic struggle that
8 African-Americans have collectively experienced and continue
9 to experience in striving to achieve fair and equal treatment
10 in this nation.
11 (b) The State Board of Education shall adopt rules
12 for the implementation and enforcement of this section.
13 Section 2. This act shall become effective on the
14 first day of the third month following its passage and
15 approval by the Governor, or its otherwise becoming law.
