10 TO BE ENTITLED
11 AN ACT
13 Relating to Montgomery County; to provide for the
14 qualifications of the sheriff; and to require completion of
15 continuing education.
16 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA:
17 Section 1. This act shall only apply in Montgomery
19 Section 2. (a) On or after the effective date of
20 this act, a person qualifying for election to the office of
21 sheriff in the county or any person appointed to serve as a
22 sheriff shall meet all of the following minimum
23 qualifications, in addition to any other qualifications
24 required by law:
25 (1) The person is a citizen of the United States.
26 (2) The person has been a resident of the county for
27 at least one year immediately prior to the qualification date.
1 (3) The person has the qualifications of an elector
2 pursuant to state and federal law and the person has been
3 registered to vote in the county at least one year immediately
4 prior to qualifying.
5 (4) The person has been awarded a four-year college
6 degree from an accredited university.
7 (5) The person is 25 years of age or older prior to
9 (6) The person at the time of qualifying has three
10 or more years of immediate prior service as a law enforcement
11 officer having the power of arrest.
12 (7) The person has never been convicted of a felony.
13 (b) Upon election, the sheriff of the county shall
14 attend annually a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education
15 approved by the Alabama Sheriffs Association.
16 Section 3. This act shall become effective
17 immediately following its passage and approval by the
18 Governor, or its otherwise becoming law.
