3 MOURNING THE DEATH OF DR. JOHN M. LONG.

5 WHEREAS, it is with profound sorrow that we note the
6 death of Dr. John M. Long, at the age of 94; and
7 WHEREAS, his passing leaves a void in the lives of
8 his loving family, many friends, and the entire State, where
9 he was highly regarded; and
10 WHEREAS, dedicated to the art of music, Dr. Long
11 lived an immensely successful and inspirational life; he
12 served as Director of Bands at Troy University from 1965 to
13 1996, and subsequently was the Dean of the College of Arts and
14 Sciences and the Dean of the School of Fine Arts at Troy
15 University; the Assistant to Troy University's former
16 Chancellor, Dr. Ralph Adams; the Distinguished Professor of
17 Music Emeritus at Troy University; the Past President of the
18 prestigious American Bandmasters Association; an active guest
19 as a conductor, speaker, clinician, and adjudicator throughout
20 the United States, Europe, Canada, and Mexico; and the Past
21 President of the Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce,
22 among other professions; he served for 24 years on the Alabama
23 Historic Commission; and
24 WHEREAS, he was the founder of the Sound of the
25 South, Troy University's nationally recognized band, and the

1 author of The Fanfare, the band's trademark piece that is
2 familiar to Troy fans everywhere; and
3 WHEREAS, Dr. Long received many National and State
4 Awards, including election to the NBA Hall of Fame of
5 Distinguished Conductors, the AWAPA Award from the NBA, the
6 Distinguished Service to Music Medal from Kappa Kappa Psi, the
7 Gold Medal from the Sousa Foundation, the Governor's Award
8 from the Alabama Council of the Arts, the Outstanding Music
9 Educator of the Year Award from the AMEA, the Barbara Odom
10 Award from the AMEA, the Al Wright Award from the WBDNA, and
11 election to the Alabama Bandmasters Hall of Fame by Phi Beta
12 Mu; in 1998, the Board of Trustees renamed the Troy University
13 School of Music the John M. Long School of Music in Dr. Long's
14 honor; and
15 WHEREAS, although his presence will be greatly
16 missed, the memory of Dr. Long will be cherished in the hearts
17 of all who knew and loved him; now therefore,
18 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
19 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That the death of Dr. John M. Long
20 is recorded with deep sadness, and this resolution is offered
21 in tribute to his life, along with heartfelt sympathy to his
22 family, whose grief is shared by many.
