8 MOURNING THE DEATH OF DR. JOHN M. LONG.

10 WHEREAS, it is with profound sorrow that we note the
11 death of Dr. John M. Long, at the age of 94; and
12 WHEREAS, his passing leaves a void in the lives of
13 his loving family, many friends, and the entire State, where
14 he was highly regarded; and
15 WHEREAS, dedicated to the art of music, Dr. Long
16 lived an immensely successful and inspirational life; he
17 served as Director of Bands at Troy University from 1965 to
18 1996, and subsequently was the Dean of the College of Arts and
19 Sciences and the Dean of the School of Fine Arts at Troy
20 University; the Assistant to Troy University's former
21 Chancellor, Dr. Ralph Adams; the Distinguished Professor of
22 Music Emeritus at Troy University; the Past President of the
23 prestigious American Bandmasters Association; an active guest
24 as a conductor, speaker, clinician, and adjudicator throughout
25 the United States, Europe, Canada, and Mexico; and the Past
26 President of the Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce,

1 among other professions; he served for 24 years on the Alabama
2 Historic Commission; and
3 WHEREAS, he was the founder of the Sound of the
4 South, Troy University's nationally recognized band, and the
5 author of The Fanfare, the band's trademark piece that is
6 familiar to Troy fans everywhere; and
7 WHEREAS, Dr. Long received many National and State
8 Awards, including election to the NBA Hall of Fame of
9 Distinguished Conductors, the AWAPA Award from the NBA, the
10 Distinguished Service to Music Medal from Kappa Kappa Psi, the
11 Gold Medal from the Sousa Foundation, the Governor's Award
12 from the Alabama Council of the Arts, the Outstanding Music
13 Educator of the Year Award from the AMEA, the Barbara Odom
14 Award from the AMEA, the Al Wright Award from the WBDNA, and
15 election to the Alabama Bandmasters Hall of Fame by Phi Beta
16 Mu; in 1998, the Board of Trustees renamed the Troy University
17 School of Music the John M. Long School of Music in Dr. Long's
18 honor; and
19 WHEREAS, although his presence will be greatly
20 missed, the memory of Dr. Long will be cherished in the hearts
21 of all who knew and loved him; now therefore,
22 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
23 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That the death of Dr. John M. Long
24 is recorded with deep sadness, and this resolution is offered
25 in tribute to his life, along with heartfelt sympathy to his
26 family, whose grief is shared by many.
