A BILL
FOR AN ACT ENTITLED
1 "An Act relating to licensure of veterinarians."
2 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA:
3 * Section 1. AS 08.98.050(b) is amended to read:
4 (b) The board may
5 (1) establish examination and registration requirements for veterinary
6 technicians;
7 (2) adopt regulations or do any act necessary to carry out its duties
8 under this chapter;
9 (3) adopt a certification process for licensure to practice veterinary
10 medicine.
11 * Sec. 2. AS 08.98.165(a) is amended to read:
12 (a) An applicant is qualified to receive a license as a veterinarian who
13 (1) is a graduate of an accredited veterinary school or who has
14 successfully completed a [THE EDUCATIONAL COMMISSION FOR FOREIGN
15 VETERINARY GRADUATES] certification process approved by the board;

1 (2) has, within the 60 months preceding application for the license,
2 passed a national examination for veterinarians approved by the board;
3 (3) has passed the written examination of the state on specific Alaska
4 issues of veterinary practice;
5 (4) is in good standing, as defined by the board in regulations; and
6 (5) has paid required fees.
7 * Sec. 3. AS 08.98.184 is amended to read:
8 Sec. 08.98.184. Licensure by credentials. The board shall approve the
9 issuance of a license to an applicant who holds a valid license to practice veterinary
10 medicine in another state, territory, or country if the applicant
11 (1) has graduated from an accredited school of veterinary medicine or
12 has successfully completed a [THE EDUCATIONAL COMMISSION FOR
13 FOREIGN VETERINARY GRADUATES] certification process approved by the
14 board;
15 (2) has been engaged in the active practice of veterinary medicine for
16 at least five of the seven years before filing the application;
17 (3) has passed the written examination of the state on specific Alaska
18 issues of veterinary practice;
19 (4) is in good standing, as defined by the board in regulations; and
20 (5) has paid required fees.
