A BILL
FOR AN ACT ENTITLED
1 "An Act prohibiting expenditure of state money on common core curriculum; relating
2 to common core standards; and providing for an effective date."
3 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA:
4 * Section 1. AS 14.07.020(b) is amended to read:
5 (b) In implementing its duties under (a)(2) of this section, the department may
6 not expend any money to implement the set of educational curriculum standards for
7 grades kindergarten through 12 developed using common core standards
8 [ESTABLISHED BY THE COMMON CORE STANDARDS INITIATIVE] and shall
9 develop
10 (1) performance standards in language arts and mathematics to be met
11 at designated age levels by each student in public schools in the state; and
12 (2) a comprehensive system of student assessments, composed of
13 multiple indicators of proficiency in language arts and mathematics; this
14 comprehensive system must

1 (A) be made available to all districts and regional educational
2 attendance areas;
3 (B) include a developmental profile for students entering
4 kindergarten or first grade; and
5 (C) include performance standards in language arts and
6 mathematics for students in age groups five through seven, eight through 10,
7 and 11 - 14.
8 * Sec. 2. AS 14.07.020 is amended by adding a new subsection to read:
9 (d) Violation of (b) of this section is punishable by a fine of not more than
10 $10,000.
11 * Sec. 3. This Act takes effect immediately under AS 01.10.070(c).
