A BILL
FOR AN ACT ENTITLED
1 "An Act relating to wearing or carrying tribal regalia and objects of cultural
2 significance at public events; and providing for an effective date."
3 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA:
4 * Section 1. AS 18.80 is amended by adding a new section to read:
5 Sec. 18.80.257. Tribal regalia at public events. (a) A state agency, a
6 municipality, the University of Alaska, or a school district may not prohibit an
7 individual from wearing tribal regalia or wearing or carrying objects of traditional
8 cultural significance at a public event.
9 (b) In this section,
10 (1) "public event" includes an award ceremony, a graduation
11 ceremony, a public meeting, or another event held or sponsored by a state agency, a
12 municipality, the University of Alaska, or a school district;
13 (2) "state agency" has the meaning given in AS 40.21.150;
14 (3) "tribal regalia" means clothing, accessories, and objects of cultural

1 significance worn or carried during traditional tribal ceremonies, celebrations, or
2 gatherings.
3 * Sec. 2. The uncodified law of the State of Alaska is amended by adding a new section to
4 read:
5 NOTIFICATION. The Department of Administration shall send either a written or
6 electronic copy of this Act to each federally recognized tribe in the state.
7 * Sec. 3. This Act takes effect immediately under AS 01.10.070(c).
