FISCAL NOTE ANALYSIS
STATE OF ALASKA BILL NO. CSSB 55
2020 LEGISLATIVE SESSION
Analysis
The Judiciary Committee Substitute for Senate Bill 55 establishes that the Alaska Court of Appeals has four judges, an
increase from the current number of three judges. This is to accommodate the large criminal caseload in that court.
SB 55 means that the court system will have an additional appellate judge, and to be operational, the judge would also
have two law clerks and one judicial assistant. The fiscal impact to the court system reflects these four new positions,
which includes salary and benefits for those added employees. The note also includes ongoing costs for software,
supplies, and subscriptions (e.g., Westlaw), each year, plus the one-time costs for furniture in year one.
