The bill introduces a new crime, "criminal trespass by drone," under W.S. 6-3-308, which makes it illegal for individuals to operate a drone at an altitude of 200 feet or lower over private land or residences without the landowner's or resident's authorization, or a court order. The definition of a "drone" is specified as an unmanned aircraft weighing no more than 55 pounds at takeoff, including any attached items.
Violations of this new law will be classified as a misdemeanor, with penalties that may include imprisonment for up to six months, a fine of up to $750, or both. The act is set to take effect on July 1, 2025.
