The bill amends Wyoming's motor vehicle laws to increase penalties for drivers who fail to stop at the scene of an accident that results in serious bodily injury or death. It introduces a knowledge requirement, stating that drivers must be "knowingly" involved in such accidents to be held accountable. The language clarifies that drivers must stop immediately at the scene and remain there until they fulfill legal obligations.
Penalties for failing to stop are also significantly increased. A driver who fails to comply with the new requirements may face misdemeanor charges with a potential imprisonment of up to one year and fines up to $5,000 if the accident results in bodily injury. If the accident results in serious bodily injury or death, the driver may be charged with a felony, facing up to five years of imprisonment and fines up to $50,000. The act will apply to all motor vehicle accidents occurring on or after its effective date of July 1, 2025.
