The bill establishes a new category of motor vehicle license plates in Wyoming specifically designed to promote suicide awareness and prevention. Individuals registering a vehicle may apply for these plates, provided the vehicle is not a commercial or multipurpose vehicle. The application process includes a one-time fee of $150, with an annual renewal fee of $50. Additionally, applicants have the option to donate $1 or more to support suicide awareness initiatives. The fees collected will be allocated to the 988 system trust fund account, which is dedicated to suicide prevention efforts.
The bill also includes provisions for the design and production of these license plates, which will feature a slogan and a distinctive symbol related to suicide awareness. The Department of Transportation is tasked with making these plates available starting January 1, 2025, and they will be subject to redesign every few years. If fewer than 500 sets of these plates are issued by December 31, 2033, the program will be terminated, and a report will be submitted to the relevant legislative committee. Additionally, the bill amends existing law to include the new license plate category in the provisions for obtaining duplicate plates. The act is set to take effect on July 1, 2024.
