The bill establishes new protocols for law enforcement officers during traffic stops in Wyoming, specifically prohibiting them from requesting that vehicle occupants exit their vehicles unless certain conditions are met. These conditions include having probable cause to believe that a crime is being committed or that the occupants may be arrested, being notified of a search warrant or an arrest warrant, being informed of a crime committed outside the state, or if the occupants are in immediate danger of bodily harm.
Additionally, the bill stipulates that if a peace officer violates this protocol, any evidence obtained as a result of that violation will be suppressed in subsequent criminal proceedings against the driver or occupant. The act is set to take effect on July 1, 2023.
