This bill aims to amend the Code of West Virginia by introducing new sections that mandate health insurance coverage for hearing aids. Effective January 1, 2026, any policy, plan, or contract issued or renewed must cover the costs of hearing aids prescribed by a licensed physician. The coverage will include initial and replacement hearing aids at least every 36 months, new hearing aids when existing ones are inadequate, related services such as audiometric testing and fittings, and at least one annual audiological evaluation. The definition of hearing aids encompasses any wearable device designed to assist with hearing, excluding batteries and cords.

Additionally, the bill stipulates that the same deductibles, coinsurance, and network restrictions applicable to other covered services will also apply to hearing aids. Coverage is capped at $1,400 per hearing-impaired ear every 36 months, with the option for insured individuals to pay the difference for higher-priced hearing aids without penalties. Furthermore, if the benefits required exceed those specified under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, insurers are not obligated to provide those additional benefits.
