This bill amends the Code of West Virginia to allow registered nurses to administer anesthetics under specific circumstances, while maintaining the existing framework for certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs). The new provisions specify that a registered nurse may administer anesthetics only under the order of a physician, dentist, or podiatrist, and only in two defined situations: when a patient is intubated and ventilated in an acute care setting, or to assist in emergency airway management. This addition aims to expand the roles of registered nurses in critical care scenarios while ensuring that the administration of anesthetics remains under the supervision of licensed medical professionals.

Additionally, the bill mandates that the Board of Nursing report to the Legislature annually, starting July 1, 2027, on the implementation and impact of these changes. The report will include any issues reported by healthcare facilities regarding the practice of nurse anesthetists and any treatment complications arising from anesthesia administration. This oversight is intended to monitor the effects of the new regulations and ensure patient safety in the administration of anesthetics by registered nurses.
